Description

The Larynx & Vocal Fold ID iBook provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure of the human larynx. Included in Larynx & Vocal Fold ID are 8 animations, 156 detail illustrations with 3 videos. Arranged as a picture book; the larynx is shown from anterior, posterior, lateral and superior views. Included are superior views of the vocal folds and associated muscles. Each view is broken into several isolated parts; cartilage, membranes, muscles and ligaments. Each view includes text descriptions. Within the multimedia capabilities of this eBook is easy access to 48 glossary entries of terms and definitions, fully cross-referenced. A knowledge check is provided at the end of each chapter section to let readers test their knowledge using a variety of question types; multiple choice, choose the correct image and label the image. The advantage offered by an eBook is that authors may employ a variety of multimedia tools to portray the concepts being addressed. The ability to insert “post it” notes into the text assists the reader in making comments, forming questions, and later returning to crucial sections in the chapters for clarification. As such, the eBook format is ideally suited as an introductory course in the human laryngeal system.

  • Larynx ID: The larynx is a complex structure whose primary biological function is to guard the airway and restrict entry of foods, fluids or foreign objects into the airway. Larynx & Vocal Fold ID is arranged as a picture book; the larynx is shown from anterior, posterior, lateral and superior views.
    • Larynx Anterior - Covers the overall structure of the larynx from a anterior view. Includes detail views of cartilages, membranes and muscles. A full view of the cartilages, thyroid and laryngeal nerve and animation of the larynx are included. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
    • Larynx Lateral - Covers the overall structure of the larynx from a lateral view. Includes detail views of cartilages, membranes and muscles. A full view of the cartilages, thyroid and laryngeal nerve and animation of the larynx, a unique cutaway view of the muscles located under the thryoid cartilage and the cartilages from the interior of the larynx are provided. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
    • Larynx Posterior - Covers the overall structure of the larynx from a posteror view. Includes detail views of cartilages, membranes and muscles. A full view of the cartilages, thyroid, laryngeal nerve, a unique cutaway view and animation of the larynx are provided. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
    • Larynx Superior - Covers the overall structure of the larynx from a superior view. Includes detail views of cartilages, membranes and muscles. A full view of the cartilages and laryngeal nerve and animation of the larynx are provided. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
  • Vocal Folds ID: The vocal folds, as seen from above, form a V. Sound is produced by bringing the vocal folds from the side of the airway toward midline, blocking the outward flow of air. The pressure from the lung builds up below the vocal folds until it is sufficient to blow the vocal folds upward. This chapter details the structure of the vocal folds through illustrations, animations and video.
    • Vocal Folds - Covers the overall structure of the vocal folds from a superior view. Includes detail views the key parts of the vocal folds. A full view of the vocal folds and a unique cutaway zoomed side view and animation, plus three normal videos of real vocal folds are provided. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
    • Vocal Muscles - Covers the overall structure of the vocal folds muscles and cartilages from a superior view. Includes detail views the key parts of the vocal folds muscles and cartilages. A full view of the vocal folds muscles and cartilages and three unique animations of the vocal folds muscles in action. A knowledge check at the end tests learning.
