Ear ID iEducate iBook

The Ear ID eBook provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure of the human ear. Included in the Ear ID are 12 animations and 120 detail illustrations. Within the multimedia capabilities of this eBook is easy access to 99 glossary entries of terms and definitions, fully cross-referenced. A knowledge check is provided at the end of each chapter section to let readers test their knowledge using a variety of question types; multiple choice, choose the correct image and label the image. The advantage offered by an eBook is that authors may employ a variety of multimedia tools to portray the concepts being addressed. The ability to insert “post it” notes into the text assists the reader in making comments, forming questions, and later returning to crucial sections in the chapters for clarification. As such, the eBook format is ideally suited as an introductory course in the human auditory systems.
  • Normal Ear: The ear is our connection with the world. It converts pressure waves in the air to signals our brain interprets as sound. The ear is responsible for both hearing and balance. It consists of the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. Together, the outer, middle, and inner ear perform acts of extraordinary range and complexity. The Ear ID eBook provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure of the human ear.
    • Ear Structure - Covers the overall structure of the human ear. The ear is responsible for balance and hearing. It consists of the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. Sound waves cause the eardrum, located where the outer and middle ear join, to vibrate and move the hair cells in the basilar membrane of the cochlea. When vibrations move these hairs, the eighth cranial nerve carries impulses for hearing and balance to the brain.
    • The Middle Ear - Covers the middle ear structures. The primary function of the middle ear is to efficiently transfer acoustic energy from compression waves in air to fluid and membrane waves within the cochlea. The middle ear consists of the tympanic membrane and three tiny bones that are hooked together to form the ossicular chain, which transduce vibrations of the eardrum into waves in the fluid and membranes of the inner ear. The eustachian tube joins the cavum tympani with the nasopharynx, allowing pressure to equalize and drainage from the middle ear to travel to the throat and be swallowed.
    • The Inner Ear - Covers the inner ear structures. Forming the innermost part of the ear, the inner ear is mainly responsible for sound detection and balance. It consists of the bony labyrinth, a hollow cavity comprising two main parts: the cochlea, dedicated to converting sound pressure patterns from the outer ear into electrochemical impulses which are passed on to the brain via the auditory nerve and the vestibular system, dedicated to balance.
